Choosing Your First Recurve Bow

Choosing Your First Recurve Bow
Choosing Your First Recurve Bow

Your first bow should help you learn good technique. Buying too much draw weight is one of the easiest ways to make archery harder than it needs to be.

Start with fit

Confirm handedness, draw length and an appropriate overall bow length. A coach can help check that the equipment allows a comfortable, repeatable position.

Riser and limbs

A modular takedown recurve lets you change limb weight as you progress. Spend for fit, reliability and adjustment rather than buying heavy limbs to avoid upgrading later.

Arrows are part of the system

Arrow length and spine must suit the bow and archer. Do not assume any arrow that physically fits the string is safe or suitable.

Use this guide alongside coaching, the club risk assessment and the current rules for the round or event you are shooting. Safety instructions from the field captain, coach or judge always take priority.
