Your first competition does not require elite scores. It requires safe shooting, basic knowledge of the round and willingness to follow the officials.
Choose the right event
Ask a coach which local shoot suits your experience. Check bowstyle, distance, number of arrows, start time, dress rules, entry deadline and whether Archery GB membership is required.
Practise the actual round
Before the event, shoot the same distance and face under normal scoring. Learn how many arrows are in each end and how long the round takes. Confirm sight marks.
Pack the day before
- Bow, string and spare string.
- Matched arrows plus spares.
- Tab or release, bracer, sling and quiver.
- Sight and stabilisers if used.
- Tools and small spare parts.
- Membership/entry information.
- Food, water and weather clothing.
At the venue
Arrive early, register, find your target and introduce yourself to target companions. Listen to the assembly and judge briefing. If unsure about scoring or procedure, ask before the round begins.
During scoring
Do not touch arrows until values are agreed and recorded. Be considerate when pulling and looking for arrows. Keep pace with the field and tell a judge promptly if equipment fails.
Judge success by experience
A first event is successful if you shoot safely, finish the round and learn how competition works. A personal best is a bonus.
