Moving back should be earned by safe, repeatable shooting, not by simply hoping the arrows reach the boss. Longer distance magnifies small inconsistencies.
When to move back
You should be able to keep arrows safely on the boss and produce a recognisable group at the current distance. If arrows are frequently missing, move closer.
Establish a sight mark
Use your known shorter-distance mark as a reference, make a conservative change and begin with the largest safe target face. Keep the first arrows controlled.
Use the badge progression
Hull Archery Club's progressive-distance badges give members a structured reason to move back. The badge remains the same while the distance underneath records the furthest successful achievement.
Further reading and club guidance
Use this guide alongside coaching, the club risk assessment and the current rules for the round or event you are shooting. Safety instructions from the field captain, coach or judge always take priority.
