Shooting Archery in Wind, Rain and Changing Weather

Outdoor archery is affected by both the arrow's flight and the archer's ability to execute the shot. The answer is rarely to make a dramatic correction after one gust.

Wind

Watch flags, trees and previous arrows. Keep the shot routine controlled and learn how your group moves in sustained wind before making a sight change.

Rain

Keep tabs, grips and equipment as dry as practical. Check footing and stop if conditions make the range unsafe.

Changing conditions

Record useful sight marks but expect them to vary. Clothing, temperature, light and wind can all change the feel of the shot.

Further reading and club guidance

Use this guide alongside coaching, the club risk assessment and the current rules for the round or event you are shooting. Safety instructions from the field captain, coach or judge always take priority.
